Several days ago I solicited comments and “high level reads” of the 60,000 word draft from several editors and readers. Below is a summary of the backgrounds of these individuals and the date I am expecting their replies.

  • V. E., an editorial coordinator for a small publishing house in Virginia (Due May 15)
  • M.A., a professional editor, proofreader, and writer who works as an editorial assistant at a small publishing house in Philadelphia (Due May 18)
  • C.K., a literature PhD candidate and freelance editor / proofreader (Due May 15)
  • C.S., an avid fantasy reader with no professional editing experience (Due May 15)

The diversity of these individuals gives me confidence that I’ll get a very nice set of comments, critiques, and suggestions. Like the academic review process, I will receive these comments and think about whether there are common themes and points of critique that MUST be addressed.

But unlike the academic review process, I don’t necessarily have to take their ideas and incorporate them, but I’m the kind of person who enjoys ruminating over how and whether an idea should be incorporated.

I’m enjoying this process and look forward to seeing what they come up with!
